My favorite back to school memory was starting college. It was such a different feeling than starting in any other grade. It was such a great feeling of independence.

  2. I’m no longer in school but the memories are still with me, and what great memories they were. I think I will post the memory that has to do with cookies because our school made the yummiest chocolate chip cookies and it goes well with the giveaway. I would always look forward to back to school because those cookies would be waiting for me. They offered them in the morning for breakfast and also during lunch time. We were only allowed 4 cookies per student, not sure why they had that rule but i’m thinking maybe because they didn’t want us to get a sugar rush or they could only make a certain amount. I was addicted to the cookies and I would get 4 in the morning for myself and then have a friend get me 4 more since she didn’t like them. We also did the same during lunch time, so when I came home from school I would have some left and shared with my mom. She would always ask me, where do you get these cookies from and I would respond, ‘They came from my heart mom, that’s where I made them” haha I was only like 13 at the time so I know it sounds silly but my mom loved it and now after 6 years they still make those same cookies. How do I know? My little cousin brings them home just like I used to!

  3. My favorite back to school memory was picking out all my back to school clothes. I would lay them out all over my bed days before and decide what I would wear the first day of school and now 25 yrs later I’m doing the same thing with my daughter. We would love to win those yummy cookies my daughter would love to put one in her lunch box

My favorite back to school memory is running up to the doors a week early to see what teacher I had and which teachers my friends had. We all used to ride our bikes over as soon as they posted the list. It was something we did ever year througout elementary school. I will never forget that. And then we could not wait to ride home and tell our parents.

  5. i absoutely favorite back to school memory is trying to decide what i was going to wear on the first day !! i would lay out the clothes i got and match up even my shoes.

Back to school was always the day after Labor day in Calif many years ago and the State fair was always going on the previous week. My Dad would take me to Sears and I’d get to pick out a new pair of shoes for the school year. I would wear the shoes to the State fair to help break them in and inevedibly I would get blisters. But the best part of the memory is, Going to the store with my Dad who passed away when I was a Sophmore in High School.. What I would give to be able to spend just one more shopping trip for new school shoes with my Dad. Cheryls wasn’t around back then, so I would bake him his favorite Chocolate Chip cookies. Happy Back to School to all the Kids today.

My favorite back to school memory is between me and my 3 children. Every year on the first day of school, I take the day off from work. It starts when I take about a hundred pictures of the kids in various poses dressed up in their first day of school clothes( even ones as they are about to get on the bus…though this may embarass them a little bit) Then I make homemade cookies for them waiting anxiously for them to go home. They get home and we talk about everything from their day, and then we go out for a family dinner to end the day! Sadly, my kids are growing so fast. I have one who just graduated college, one entering college and a 10th grader. My eldest son secretly admistted to me the other day that while they used to act as if I was torturing them with all of the pictures etc. They were so happy that I took the day off every year and was waiting when they arrived. He told me it made them feel so special, and it makes me feel special too!

My favorite back to school memory is shopping for clothes and supplies with my mom and 2 younger sisters. We had such fun “girl time”, then would go home & model our new clothes for our dad. He would oooohhh and aaahhhh, making us all feel so special & loved! Thanks Dad….you’re still the best!!

  9. I am not sure about my favorite school memory. I liked school. Mom made cookies year round but it was nice to come home and have fresh cookies waiting. There was one kind that weused to always ask to eat the dough. I enjoyed getting my new school supplies. Thank you for giving us a chance to win some cookies.

  10. My favorite back to school memory was shopping with my mom and sisters for the basic school essentials and a new outfit for the first day. I loved the first day because I would dress in my new outfit, wait for the bus and be able to see all the friends I wasn’t able to see over the summer. Now that I am a mom, my favorite back to school memory is getting my son ready for his first day. We shop for a new back pack and on the first day we make a special breakfast and head to the school for the flag ceremony. I love watching his confidence level increase every year he is in school. Then he comes home and we celebrate with cookies and snacks his aunts gave him to celebrate his first day. It’s great that when I younger I was able to celebrate back to school with my sisters and now they get to celebrate with me and my son (their nephew). Back to school is a great family celebration!!

My favorite back to school memory is my mom always buying us a great new purse and shoes for the first day of school. I grew up in a small community and most of my clothes were made by my grandmothers but my mom made sure her girls had a great purse and the cutest shoes. I look back now and realize I was not a cookie cutter in my fashion, it was special:) I also enjoyed getting back together with my friends.

My favorite memory was when our dog followed our school bus for 11 miles… the bad part was how to get her home after we got to school. She was definitely too tired to walk back home. She got to stay in school with me all day and rode the bus back home with me. She was such a hit for this non-popular school girl. 🙂

  13. I didn’t really like going back to school, but I did like all the fresh school supplies. Fresh Pencils with still intact erasers, fresh crayons, fresh folders. I loved getting a brand new binder too (mine were always trashed by the end of the year.) All the new school supplies didn’t ever really ease the pain of losing my Summer Freedom, but I still enjoyed getting them.

My favorite back to school was my new school uniform, choice of backpack and new lunch box. I remember the smell of fall days, and it still takes me back to walk with my best friends to school every morning. Back in the day, when it was safe. The joy of familiar faces and best friends that I could share my stories with about my summer. New cafeteria smells of bologne and peanut butter and jelly. Walking home and stopping off at the penny candy store, when cand was still a penny. Those friends I still have today, and we talk about the first day of school and share them with our children also.

My Favorite back to school memory was picking out my lunch box. My first lunch box was the Brady Bunch and I remember how excited I was making my bologna sandwich and I would neatly place a small bag of cheetos for my side and grapes for dessert and I made sure to have my thermos full of Tang! I remember walking from room to room looking for my name and when I finally said my good byes to my mom. I woulf sit in a circle with other children being really proud of my lunch box! lol..I can still smell the inside of the metal lunch box. I think later on in the first grade my mother had bought me a Charlie’s Angel lunch box but after awhile I guess I got tired of bologna sandwiches that I started to eat at the cafeteria. Wow…… so many years have passed. If I could go back in time I would go back to that moment sitting in the circle and holding on to my lunch box.

My favorite back to school memories were going supply and clothing shopping. I’ve always been a shop-a-holic 😉 It was so fun picking out my own things… and I was always so excited for the first day of school I’d hardly be able to sleep the night before the, even when i was in highschool !!! I’ve tried to get my children (ages 5 and 7) into the school supply spirit and only my youngest (girl) enjoys it! She’s taking after me, the shop-a-holic part 😉
This year will be a little sad for me, both of my children will be gone all day in school ! Although it will be nice to get some “me” time I’ll really miss them! I’ve decided this year after their first day, I’m going to take them out for ice-cream and make it a tradition!

  17. My favorite back to school memory was getting ready for school in August and wearing my special outfit for the first day of school. I always remember walking to school in middle school or the school bus in HS and it was that crisp weather and the air smelled so good. I loved that feeling when it was just a little chilly where you need a little sweater and the air smelled so great!

My favorite back to school memory was shopping for school supplies! I loved all of the new crayons and glue sticks and other supplies. I would spend hours organizing the supplies, checking the list over and over to make sure I had everything, making piles, sorting the supplies by subject, etc, etc. Choosing a new lunch box and back pack was important, too, but nothing compared to getting the largest box of new crayons I could talk my mom into buying!

My favorite school memory was picking out my first Trapper Keeper. I remember taking forever picking out the best one!

  20. A memory that I have and will never forget is when I was in elementary and middle school, we had a boy in our class that threw up every first day of school. I guess his nerves would get to him, and just when you thought he had made it thru the morning he’d suddenly throw up all over the desk. Gross, I know!!! I always felt sorry for him, especially when everyone in the class made a mad dash to the other side of the room! You didn’t say the memory had to be a pleasant one! lol

I couldn’t wait to get back to school for their lunches. So their pizza was greasy and their cookies where gooey I just loved them both. We are talking the 1970s here. Lol. And seeing my school friends made me so happy! I couldn’t wait til music class to play violin with others. Great memories! @MCJunkie

My favorite back to school memory was getting the kids ready for the first day, getting them to school and then I could sit back, relax and have a cup of tea and a cookie!

  23. My favorite things about going back to school was always school supply and clothing shopping. Having new things going into a new year was always fun for me. It was also so much fun seeing people you knew but hadnt seen all summer again.

  24. Lauren Granger Reply

My favorite back to school memory was not mine, but my sisters first day of kindergarten. She was all ready with her pig tails and her little lunch box. The excitement on her face was priceless and it stuck with me all these years. (she’s 30 now with her doctorate) Sometimes someone else’s joy can very much be your own!

  25. It was so long ago but I remember laying out all my new clothes and deciding what to wear the first day. Then I couldn’t wait to get there to catch up with all the friends I hadn’t seen all summer and compare stories on what we did all summer long.

  26. This is really going to show my age but starting when I was in Junior High, I got to get a new pocketbook in advance of every school year. This may not seem very special today since girls have dozens of them but “back then” and in my case, you got one a year. It was such
fun — feeling so grown up — deciding what style and color to get!

My favorite memory was hearing from all my dorm mates that there was a blue card in my mailbox slot. They all knew it was there before I did usually. The blue card meant that there was a package from home and they all knew that meant alot of goodies. Especially my mom’s homemade chocolate chip cookies or snickerdoodles. They tasted just like Chery’s cookies!

I don’t have a favorite back to school memory, however, I love looking at the pictures from each year’s first day of school that my mom took. You could see how shy and scared I was and how that slowly went away each year as I got older and entered a new grade. And of course the fashion changes each year are so much fun to go back and look at it! I love (now) that she took so many pictures, and I plan on doing the same with my kids when they get to that age!

  29. My favorite back to school memory is going to the 5th Grade at Longfellow Elementary in Pasadena, California. We had just moved to California from Louisiana so it was a huge culture shock and I felt like an outsider. I was the girl who talked funny and dressed funny but my teacher, Mrs. Patterson, who was from Louisiana as well made me feel welcome from the moment that I entered her room. I forgot to grab my lunch that day and she gave me half of her sandwich.

By the end of the day, I’d met new friends and I felt like I belonged there. This teacher had such an impact in my life and really enocuraged me to succeed. After a few weeks of being in her class, she had me tested to bypass a grade which unfortunately meant that I would be leaving her class and moving on to the 6th grade. She wanted me to be successful and I was 🙂

It was all about the anticipation….picking out the perfect new outfit for the first day of school and having it ready the night before. Getting the backpack loaded and ready for the following morning. That nervous butterfly feeling in the pit of your stomach…would I like my new teacher, will I know anyone in my class, will I make new friends? Mom, could I PLEASE take my lunch this year so I don’t have to suffer through choking down the bland cafeteria food? Every year the same reply….”no.” And finally entering the classroom decorated with new posters and charts, the smell of chalk dust, and making my way to the newly assigned desk where I would sit for the entire year. Sitting, breathing and finally calming to the clang of the school bell and the sound of my new teachers voice…”Welcome class!”

  31. When I think about my favorite back to school memory I cant help but remember the “First day of school” and my “First day of school outfit” it had to be the best and most fly outfit you bought! There was really no other day during the school year that I was actually “eager” to get up and get going to school! But really, that first day, it seemed to set the tone for the rest of the school year. Also, taking my brand new book bag to school with all my new school supplies (even though they were never needed on the first day) ahhhh to go back to school and do it all over, that would be awesome! Since I cant go back and do it over, I’d LOVE to have some lovely iced cookies instead! 😉

  32. I always hated going back to school. I’ve never been an early bird. However, I clearly remember my first day of junior high. I come from a small community. Junior high and high school students had classes in the same buildings. I was so excited to be in class with older kids. I knew most of them and they liked me.
On my first day I walked into a social studies class that had some older students. My high school friends asked me to sit with them and I thought I was the coolest junior high kid in the class. I’ll carry those memories with me forever.

My favorite back to school memory doesn’t come from me when I was a kid but more from a teacher’s perspective! It was the first year I taught Kindergarten and I loved watching the happy, sad, teary eyed little 5 year olds walking in the room attached to the hip to their moms or dads it was great to see them sitting down and learning how to adjust to a new life in a “big kid school”, the first hour was a little tough but once we sat down to read a story, all the fear seems to leave the room and smiles began to appear on every little one’s face! It was amazing to see, almost like in the movies but better! Thank you for this opportunity!

  34. My favorite back to school memory was the excitement of meeting my new teachers and seeing my friends again. I also loved the smell from the lunchroom especially on the days that they were baking the cinnamon buns and the big yeast rolls. I graduated 28 years ago and now I have a daughter who is a freshman in college.

  35. Believe it or not, my favorite back to school memory is the years when I started on my birthday ( Aug 24th) It was always so fun to have all my friends wish me a happy birthday after we went all Summer with out seeing each other. They would decorate my locker, sing to me- it was awesome to feel so important 🙂

  36. My favorite memory was the last day of school when we got to play all kind of neat games and contests. We all got an award for some reason so everyone had great memories of that day.

  37. I remember the excitement each year in elementary when you had your new clothes and shoes laying out, a brown paper bag of new school supplies and could barely sleep the night before thinking about all of the possibilities of teachers and combinations of friends in your classroom. I would go out and wait for a very long time for the bus not sure exactly what time it would arrive the first day. Then when you arrived at school you felt the electricity of seeing your classmates after a long summer and searching the lists outside the teacher’s door hoping to find your name with your best friend’s name. It was always so exciting.

Loved getting new school supplies! The brand new box of Crayons – all perfect and new, none broken and all were sharp. The new pencils and getting to know the new teacher. Elementary school was so exciting. Now my children are in middle school and high school. Boys are just not as excited about school supplies, though of course there are no crayons needed anymore. One more week before they go off to school. We have to jam in the last summer fun this week and next.

  39. My favorite back to school memory involves my children. On the first day of school, I always take pictures of my kids (to hear them tell, it is waaaayyyyy more than one picture). We put them in a special album. The kids enjoy looking back at how much they’ve changed, and it is a way for me to capture a special moment. My oldest is a freshman in college this year, and to my delighted surprise, he snapped a photo of himself on the first day of classes on his phone and sent it to me. He really didn’t hate that back to school tradition after all.

  40. I remember that when I became a senior and I had a 1/2 day then got to go to work at IBM and got paid for it. If I knew then I would have all my life to work I probably wouldn’t have been so excited. I think I was more excited about leaving school after 3 classes.

My favorite school memory goes back many moons ago to when I was in the 4th grade (I am now 52). Mrs. Nicholson was a very no nonsense teacher. This was back in the day when you had the same teacher for every class in the same classroom. We found out she was retiring at the end of the year and we, the 4th grade students, organized a Retirement Party for her. We decorated the room and had taken up a collection (all coins) to give as a gift. We must not have had much adult interference which made it all the more special. With flowers picked from home, homemade decorations and some donated cupcakes, we surprised our elderly teacher and presented her with the bag of coins. We were a proud bunch that day and it brought tears to our teacher’s eyes. Memories of times past…Brenda Parker

  42. My favorite back to school memory was getting to go shoe shopping with my mom. As the youngest of 8 children, I rarely got “alone” time with my parents, but my mom always made picking out our new shoes into a big deal. Not only did we get new shoes, but we got ice cream, too. The ice cream was always supposed to be a “secret” from the others, but I am nearly certain that they did that for all of us.

I am about to start my eighth year teaching 5th grade. I student taught at the school where I currently work. I remember my first day of student teaching like it was yesterday. I started on the first day as the students and was so nervous. I’ll never forget this cute little fourth grader who was so nervous to come into the class room. She had cute pigtails and was all dressed up in her new outfit. I had to walk her to the office for something and she grabbed my hand with this tight little grip. I think our little trip to the office put us both at ease and made us gave us a special bond. She was always by my side and wanting my help during the 3 months I student taught there. This was in 2003 and I still keep in touch with her to this day. She wick be a senior in high school this year and I am so proud of her. I’ll never forget those pigtails and that huge grin she gave me after we both felt better about the first day of school. 🙂

My favorite back to school memory is my son’s first day of Kindergarten. He went to school on the bus, which I followed. They I got a call from the school about noon that he had fallen on the equipment and hit his head. I left work early to get him from latchkey, so he wouldn’t have a really long first day. But, to my absolute horror his new teacher had sent him home on the bus. Thankfully, the school was able to contact the driver who stayed with him while I sped like a demon to get home. When I got there, he got off the bus, put his hands on his hips and said “where were you.” I now shudder every first day. I pray that they get smoother as they get older.

  45. My favorite back to school memory is an “every year” tradition, getting all ready, standing in the front hallway, hand on the doorknob, and my Mom taking a photo to document the event. For years this photo included my metal Star Wars lunchbox, me being very tan from the summer, and my long hair in pigtails. Really great memories, but I’m so glad my school years are over!

My favorite back to school memory was back in high school. I came back my senior year minus my large afro and wearing contacts instead of glasses. A lot of people were surprised.

  47. New shoes! At the end of summer, just before Labor Day there was a special journey downtown for school shoes. On the way home we’d stop for cookies at a small bakery with a long, clear glass display case! From age six to age ten it is the only memory of my grandmother and great-grandmother together, taking me for shiny new school shoes. I have a vague memory of each pair of shoes but sharp memory of both women and the special treat. I am now in my 50’s.

  48. My favorite back to school memory was going clothes shopping in Vermont. My dad was a bricklayer and would take extra jobs doing fireplaces, foundations, etc, so my sister and I could go shopping for new clothes for school in the fall and in the spring. We would take the ferry across Lake Champlain, go to the mall and out to eat for lunch. Dad would be so patient while we tried on various outfits and looked for sales to make our money go further.

One of my favorite times in school was in 3rd grade. II asked my mom to not buy me a new outfit for the school picnic but buy a girl in my class a new outfit. She was not treated well by her stepmother and her step sister got all the new clothes while she had to wear worn out hand me down clothes. She was picked on by other kids, and I felt bad for her. I picked out a new short set with shoes and brought it to her to wear for our picnic. The look on her face was priceless and the compliments from other kids brought a smile to her face.

  49. My favorite back to school memory would be the first day. I loved getting all of my brand new school supplies into my backpack and taking the classic first day photo with my sister. When I was in grade school, we would start the first day with all the classes lining up on the playground. I have found memories of my mom and dad taking my sister and I–meeting the new teacher and seeing old friends from years past.

My favorite memory was getting to have music and art classes and the feeling of putting on my new shoes and clothes. And being with my friends I hadn’t see for a few months.

  51. My favorite memories of going back to school include the excitement the week before school of going to the building to look at the class lists posted on the window. We all wanted to know which teacher we got and which friends would be in our class. I also remember my mom taking a picture every year on the first day as my siblings and I waited at the bus stop.

My favorite memories of back-to-school are from a teacher’s perspective. I was lucky to have enjoyed a 33-year career as an elementary teacher in the same town where I grew up and went to school. In fact, I taught for most of those years in the same elementary school that I attended!!! I rarely slept the night before school started because I was excited and nervous (yes, even teachers are nervous on the first day of school!). I loved the anticipation of seeing my “new” students coming down the hall or up the stairs and being able to give them hugs. They, in turn, were excited to tell me all about their summer fun and ask questions about what they would be learning. But perhaps the most fun was just watching the kids greet each other, the girls squealing over each other and the boys just grinning and talking quietly. I’m retired now, but those memories come flooding back every Labor Day weekend……and I smile.

School starting meant “recycling” (which wasn’t a used word then 🙂 unused work pages from the teacher’s trashcans to use for playing “school” at home. I used them frugally through out the summer til I could get back to school for more.
I saw teachers throw away sheets and I would squirm with anxiety until I could get to them. After school, I would run home and start our neighborhood school with friends and our dolls. Oh, what fun. Now our children use computers and IPads and the days of imaginary school are gone. Except for the memories!!

  54. My favorite back to school memory comes from Kindergarten. I had the best Kindergarten teacher. She was so caring and fun. One of my favorite things that she would do came when we wore a new pair of shoes to school. Every time you wore a new pair of shoes she would play her piano and you would get to skip around the classroom. On the first day of school every one was wearing new shoes so we all got to do it!
This question came at just the perfect time since now everything has come full circle. My son just started Kindergarten and I thought about my old teacher as I was buying him his new pair of shoes for school. Where has the time gone? I suppose that is the question every parent asks!

  55. My favorite back to school memory is actually one with my kids. They must have been in preschool and first grade. They were so excited to have all their new duds on. Smiles brightened their faces. It was a great first day of school for both of them!

Although this year, they have been fighting all summer, so sending them off in a couple weeks may just be the best memory so I don’t have to hear them fight anymore 😉

  56. My favorite back to school memory was finding out who my new teacher was and which of my friends were in my class. The class list was always posted on the outside of each classroom door about a week before school started back up. I can still remember in grades 4-6 meeting up with friends and walking to the school to see them. It was always very exciting to get the teacher you wanted and to get some of your friends in your class.

My favorite back to school memory goes way back.
My very best friend was a year older than me. When she started kindergarten we developed a plan so we could go to school together. It was simple – she needed to flunk kindergarten.
My mom picked her up after school and she stayed at our house until her parents were home from work. I remember sitting in the back of our Grande Torino Station Wagon (I warned you this memory goes way back) reviewing her coloring and reminding her to scribble more and color outside the lines. If our plan was successful she would repeat kindergarten and then we could go be in the same class the next year and all through high school. Although she passed kindergartner that year, and we never were in the same classes we are still very good friends after 30+ years.

My favorite back-to-school memory has played out more than once. My first two children (both girls) are 20-months apart in age; then, 12 years later, I had another daughter whose younger brother came along 30 months after. A bittersweet memory it is…however, I distinctly remember the younger sibling missing their respective older sibling when school started. After spending most of their time together, suddenly they were separated (and there wasn’t anything I could do about it). My youngest is now in 8th grade. I remember how eager he was to start school–he went running out to the bus! The only tears were mine 🙂
What a wonderful way to celebrate the start of a new school year. My kids would be thrilled to have your cookies for an after-school snack! Thanks for the giveaway.

I remember growing up my mom used to make a big deal about the “back to school” first day outfit =) We would shop for the perfect “grown-up” outfit (this was 1st grade! a big deal!) and then my mom would proceed to take tons of pictures of me “posing” like a big girl on the front steps about to wait for the bus at the bottom of the driveway… sitting, standing, model poses, hands on hips.. LOL I still have those pictures and they take me back to the memories of the first days of school! Now I am a high school teacher and the experience of anxiety and the end of summer are a little less desirable…but I still go shopping for a back to school “first day” outfit every year =)

  61. I don’t know if I would call it my favorite but my most vivid memory, is the 1st day of class for every year I went to elementary school the teacher would call my name and I would have to raise my hand and they ALWAYS mispronounced my name….”Donalda” that is why I go by Donna much easier…lol

My favorite back to school memory was while in grade school, the 1st day when the school day was over, my mom always had a tea party waiting for me! She is Scottish, so we had the china tea set and tablecloth on the dining room table, sugar cubes and milk for the tea, and plenty of cookies! An annual tradition and I just loved it! My granddaughters are only 2 and 4 months, but I plan to start the same tradition with them when they go to school!

  63. My favorite memory was getting to go back-to-school shopping with my sister and mom. We lived in a very small town (one traffic light) so just going to the mall was a HUGE deal! Mom would drive us to the mall and let us go into JCPenney with her Penney’s credit card. We could each get a couple of new outfits and shoes. If that wasn’t enough, we’d then go out to eat to a nice restaurant (again, small town so our ONLY restaurant was a Kentucky Fried) before traveling the hour home.

My favorite back to school memory is through my two son’s. What fun we had shopping for their favorite action hero backpacks, coordinating their new school clothes and making lunches. I would love to bake a few times a week and sit down at the table with them afterschool with milk and cookies or brownies and hear about their day. I remember growing up thinking how I always knew I wanted to be a Mom. For moments like this, being there when they came home from school each day and hearing if it was a good day or bad day, I would be the one to hear it first. The boys are now 23 and 26 and still call me a few times a week to tell me about their day or about their jobs and activities. You just can’t replace those intimate moments with your children.

My school was a small community with the Jr High near the town bakery and pharmacy. Early in the morning several of the children would go to the bakery to purchase nice cold choc. milk and some sort of fresh pastry before the hot long day of treacherous middle school Math, English, History or PE. We were only allowed 5 students in at a time so a line would be up the sidewalk. At the end of the day if you skipped the bakery in the morning or saved some of your cash you would go to the pharmacy. This was a much longer wait of anticipation from the long hot day because you were only allowed 3 students in at a time. Some days that line went down the block, around the corner and almost to the school itself. But the wait for those delicious treats were always worth it. It was always kinda of funny that the bakery was a hit in the warm and COLD months. Just seemed to cold in the afternoons to wait in a long line for a piece of gum vs the fresh donuts of the morning. Just something about fresh baked good!

Mine favorite memory USED to be the annual pictures under the pine tree in front of our house – first my brother, then next year my brother and me, then 4 years later our baby brother was added to the mix. As of Monday, 8/22/2011 – my favorite new memory is my beautiful grandson heading off to kindergarten with his new backpack. (My new facebook profile photo) He had just gotten glasses the Saturday before – and he went from being a precious toddler baby to a big kid – almost overnight. Sniff, sniff… with his 3 year old brother chattering away next to him just as excited to see his brother head off to school. Our big kindergartener told his mom that she didn’t need to escort him to his class since, “I am a kindergartener now, mom!”

My absolute favorite back to school memory is with my son (who is now all grown up and in the military). I always took the day off, just he and I to go to school and every year when I would drop him off or send him off I would, put lipstick on, kiss the palm of his hand and tell him that if he needed me or he was scared, all he had to do was put his hand on his cheek and I would be there! Well, before he deployed to Iraq this past year, I went to see him at Fort Hood and before I left – I put lipstick on and kissed his hand and told him his momma would always be there for him if he needed me or if he got scared…of course this time – I got an OHHHH MOM!!! He has since made it back from Iraq and I will be seeing him again in about 2 weeks and before he leaves – I will kiss his hand again.

My favorate back to school memory actually started this year, while my first child went to kindergarten. she was so excited to be going to school and riding that big yellow bus! on the first day of school she woke up and told us, “it’s today, today is school! i can’t wait to go!” It’d be great if every year were this easy!

  69. This is not my most favorite memory, but certainly the one that left the biggest impression. My family moved to a new home in a new city just as I was starting high school. I missed the first day and so started a few days later than everyone else. Which made me the main focus in each class as the “new kid” in school. And being as how I was a shy kid to begin with it was a very difficult time for me. That was decades ago and still makes me cringe!

My favorite back to school memory is the memories I have of getting my two boys ready for the first day of school. The shopping for clothes, backpacks and school supplies. I have a real addication some would for school supplies some would say and my boys have seemed to follow in my shoes. We love seeing what new pens, pencils, notebooks, etc come out each year. This year is a little bitter sweet since my oldest son is a senior in high school this year but I am sure we’ll still do all these things next year for college.=)

Whenever I look at my mom’s photo album from 1970, it takes me back to my favorite back-to-school memory–one picture in particular. The black-and-white photo shows a little girl with long brown hair all the way down her back standing in the driveway of a suburban house in a “Wonder Years” Southern California neighborhood. She’s wearing a patchwork dress with an attached apron that her mother made especially for her first day in kindergarten–you know, the kind that were popular back then. She has a big smile on her face. Of course, that was me! I still remember my mom taking that picture. I remember walking to school, too, with my mom (and my little sister in the stroller). I was so excited! I think I skipped the entire way! When we got to the school, I was just about ready to burst. I can see the kindergarten classroom–the little wooden play furniture, the trikes out on the little playground, the cubby holes for our projects. I can smell the paste, crayons, and poster paint. And I remember the highlight of my day–meeting my very first school friend, Christine. I believe that day set the tone for my entire school experience. Now, here I am, 40 years later, with my two children starting back to school–middle school. I hope their memories are as wonderful as mine.

My favorite memory is also my most embarrassing memory. I was starting my sophomore year in high school, which where I grew up was the first time we began going to the high school. I got all dressed up. I wore black slacks, a red jacket top and black flats. An old high school friend of my mother’s happened to be one of the assistant principals. When he saw me that morning, he teased me for being so dressed up. Saying something along the lines of “Boy you sure are over dressed this morning”. I will never forget being mortified that even the principal thought I was too dressed up. Now I realize that he was just teasing me and I looked pretty darn cute.

  73. My favorite school memories are picking out that special outfit to wear the first day (it would be uniforms the rest of the time) and looking forward to seeing the friends from school that I hadn’t seen all summer. Every thing was new and exciting the first day!

My favorite back to school memory was when I stayed at Grandma’s house on school nights! She was so much fun, and she spoiled me. Since she lived just a block away I was able to stay at her house on some school nights. She let me pack my own lunches, which made me feel really grown up. I did take advantage and added a few extra cookies though!

  75. My favorite memories of back to school are all the planning that went into that first day. I loved picking out a new outfit to wear and selecting all my school supplies for the year. I still to this day love getting my boys ready for their first day of school. There’s just something about starting off fresh and with a clean slate.

School memories? Who doesn’t have one! I have hundreds…and to choose one? Impossible. I have to admit, now as a a teacher of teachers one of my favorite memories THIS YEAR was in Valdosta, Georgia…a great few days of teaching with an amazing group of Kinder to Grade 2 Teachers. Our last assignment of the three days together…celebrate National Oatmeal Day (yep! really! There is a National Day celebrating oatmeal!) To get them started on an inventive writing assignment, I passed out oatmeal cookies…oh…how I had wished I had Cheryl’s cookies! Now THAT would be a celebration…of the tastebuds! The group writing experiences went on…the teachers created posters, poems and even songs about Oatmeal cookies! That is a lesson that THEY will not forget for a long time to come. If you really want people (or kids) to remember and to experience something…a cookie does the trick!
Did I mention I’d love to return to Valdosta to teach again this fall? I do! And, if I get the chance, I’ll share MY cookie story (or maybe some cookies?) with the teachers creating new memories in my next workshop-class!

My favorite memory is probably my first day of school. I remember waiting at the bus stop with my parents and our two dogs. When the bus stopped and I got on my dogs tried to follow me so they could come along.

  78. One particular favorite memory is hard to pin down. We always got to go the PX (dad was in national guards) and pick out new clothes. It was always an entire day trip. However, my favorite memory would probably be the year I got to take a taxi cab to school (instead of walking or bus).

We had a house fire, then had to buy and move to a new house and it was in a different district. Rather than making me change schools, my parents hired a taxi to take me to school each day (it wasn’t the whole year though). The great part was that I felt special because the other kids thought we “got rich” because I got to take a taxi to school. In hind sight, it was probably a financial burden for my parents to do this for me. I appreciate the sentiment a lot more now as an adult than I did as a child.

  79. My favorite back to school memory was going to buy new school supplies. I spent so much time carefully picking out the right pencils, scissors and lunch box. The lunch box was the harderst choice to make.

For me, it was when my mother would pick me on my lunch hour in elementary and take me to get ice cream for lunch! Usually on my birthday or sometimes just because.
It still puts a smile on my face and I can’t wait to do it for my son who’s beginning Kindergarten this year.

I was always a shy little girl and had a difficult time with school. In the 5th grade, I had a teacher who would always make sure to give her students a hug on their way out the door at the end of the day. Her sweet loving nature made me feel loved and accepted. Because of her, I began looking forward to going to school. Mrs. Kramer is a teacher that I will never forget.

  82. Growing up with nine siblings I knew it was difficult for my parents to save up enough money to buy all of the necessary supplies for each of us to return to school each year. It was normal, and necessary, for us to wear hand-me-downs from older siblings while peers would show up in brand new clothes. My parents worked hard to provide us with the best educational opportunities available and even though they didn’t realize it at the time, their back-to-school preparation with us still remains one of my favorite memories from my childhood.

Mom and Dad would spread all of our newly bought school supplies (pencils, erasers, etc.) across their bed and set out ten pencil boxes labeled with each of our names. They would then count out an even amount supplies for each of us and place them in our pencil box. I loved the process – maybe that is why I became a teacher and still love new school supplies.

  83. My favorite back to school activity was getting ready for the county fair. It was time to have fun with family and friends before the school year would kick off. Even though it was usually hectic–way too many things planned for too short of a time period. But all of the chaos paid off due to the fun with friends, showing animals for 4-H, riding carnival rides. And then, it would be done and back to school and books. Great memories, life lessons learned as well as a little spending cash for new school clothes!!!

Taking pictures of my kids on the first day of school. They thought it was fun when they were little, not so much as they got older, BUT I kept taking the pictures!!!!

The best going back to school memory I ever say I have had was when I actually went back to school to finish.
I decided when I was 17, I wanted to stop going to high school. It seems as though this was a bad choice but
I found it very hard to understand and seek the help amongst the most loud and obnoxious group of teens. The
Teacher’s just kept talking as they did there thing and basically said if you heard me great if not I don’t care. It was
so bad. I talked it over with my parents and they with hope and encouragement agreed to let me finish school at a college.

I went to classes to make sure I knew the work for awhile at my college. Then came the big test. I went not in the hopes
Of passing and getting at least a GED. I waited a couple days and got my results back. I opened it slowly and I was so nervous
because I knew this is what is going to start my future. So I opened it and looked and well I just could not believe it. It was
a high score so high they sent me an official High School Diploma! The best feeling ever! The best memory ever!!! Now
I have my 2 year old daughter to take the place of that when she starts her first day!

  86. My favorite memories were school shopping of course. We had a day for the just the girls to go to the department store. We went from floor to floor getting everything we needed. Living in a small town our choices were limited. This was a big treat for us.

  87. My favorite school memory is actually coming home from school. My sisters and I would always sit around the table with mom and dad and tell them everything that happened that day at school. We got to hear everyone’s day and enjoyed sharing stories.

  88. I’m looking at an ad in the Clipper Magazine to try Cheryl’s Cookies for FREE! Now let me see … I can sample six (6) cookies and pay only shipping and handling charges of $6.95 for these FREE cookies. hehe. How ridiculous !!

My favorite memory of back to school is from my daughter last year. It was her first time at “Big Kid” school since she was a new Kindergartener. She couldn’t wait to get on her new dress and put on her new back pack and go. After the millions of pictures from parents and grandparents, she was ready to go. As the bell rang, she promptly headed to the line without hesitation. She started walking into class with such a smile on her face, I didn’t want to stop her to say goodbye……then she finally looked my way and mouthed ” I love you”. It was priceless.

I barely remember this but I had to ride the bus on the first day of school when the bus arrived my Mom had to put me up into the bus and run off and I was screaming and crying “I don’t want to go to school” and my Mom said you have to go or I will go to jail. I remember screaming anyway and the bus driver told her not to worry that I would be alright. I now know why she wanted me to go to school… my parents had NINE children and that was the only peace and quiet my mom got all day was when we were all in school. I have wonderful parents. I Love You Mom and Dad.

  91. I think my favorite back to school memory was picking out the outfit I was going to wear the night before school. I would be so analytical about what I was going to wear. Re-trying on outfits and planning how I was going to do my hair. My mom thought I was the funniest kid in the world. I also made her take First Day of School pictures, cause I loved getting my pictures taken.

My Favorite back to school memory is walking to school on the tree lined streets of upstate NY in my new dress and MaryJane shoes with my brother and sister. I would carry my Peanuts lunchbox. It was so exciting to arrive and see who I would get to sit next to, where my desk would be and what sweet treats Mom would place in my lunch box. We each got one treat wrapped in a napkin with a note of love from Mom. Smiles just thinking about it.

  93. My favorite back to school memory goes all the way back to Kindergarten. I am the fifth of five children and I had watched my brothers and sisters go to school while I was left at home. I was so excited to finally be able to go to school too! I still remember getting the news that I had Mrs. Fisher for a teacher and that I was afternoon Kindergarten. We made butter that first day of school, something I’ll never forget! I was so excited that first day, I remember parents crying all around. I didn’t understand why they were crying, now that my daughter is heading to Kindergarten I understand completely. 🙂 As much as I’m sad to see her growing up, I’m thrilled for her to get to experience the fun of school.
